The Amazing Benefits of Insulating Your Home

May 03, 2021

Most people think the benefits of  home insulation are limited to heating during the cold months. In reality, insulation can be valuable for your home all year round.

In poorly insulated homes, natural mechanisms such as conduction and convection account for almost 35% of energy loss. Similarly, uninsulated roofs also experience air leakage, losing up to 25% of heat from your home, forcing your air conditioning unit to work much harder to keep you comfortable. This can significantly reduce efficiency, causing energy bills to be heavy on the pocket.

It is imperative to invest in an insulation system that is both efficient and effective, so you can enjoy the following benefits of insulating your home:

1. Reduces Energy Costs

With energy costs on the rise, it has become increasingly important for homeowners to save up on bills as much as possible. By insulating your home, you can cut down on energy bills up to 40%, depending on the size and type of your home.

Whether you opt for spray foam insulation or blown in insulation, you can reduce the rate of air leakage from your home to a great extent.

As heat moves from warmer to cooler environments, insulation systems serve as an effective barrier to heat flow. This protects your indoor home environment from heat loss in the winter and heat gains in the summer. At the end of the day, this can increase efficiency and lower your energy bills to a great extent.

2. Maximizes Comfort

Among its many benefits, home insulation can help you achieve maximum comfort within your home environment. It keeps your house cozy in the winter and cool in the summer. Depending on the weather conditions, you can maintain a stable indoor temperature most suited to your needs.

With a well-insulated home, you can enjoy a comfortable living space all year round without relying on blankets or fans.

3. Prevents Mold and Damage

Besides providing a pleasant indoor environment, home insulation can also reduce the risk of condensation and wall dampness. In most households, mold growth is directly linked to the level of temperature and humidity in your environment. If your home environment is damp, there is a great chance that you will experience mold growth.

Mold can be severely damaging to your home structure. If it isn't dealt with in time, mold can cause long-term deterioration of your walls. At the same time, it can severely impact your indoor environment and affect the overall health of your family members. By insulating your home, you can control mold growth by keeping condensation levels down to an optimal level.

4. Adds Resale Value

Energy-efficient upgrades can significantly increase the resale value of your property. For most homebuyers, energy-efficient properties have become a top priority due to advantages such as lower energy bills and increased comfort. For this reason, home insulation can be a great addition to increase the value of your home if you intend to sell it within the next five years.

To many, when they think of insulation, they think of rolls (or batts) of pinkish, fluffy fibreglass insulation often found exposed in crawl spaces and attics alike. The thing is, while these batts of fibreglass are well and good if you’re looking to have insulation installed after your home has been built (which is likely the majority of the population), blown-in insulation is the easier choice. This article will describe what blown-in insulation is, as well as dispel some very common myths surrounding this environmentally friendly insulation product! What is blow-in insulation? Blow insulation, sometimes referred to as blown-in insulation or blow-in insulation, is loose home insulation material made of cellulose or fibreglass. Both materials are typically treated with boric acid to keep out rodents. Boric acid is non-toxic, so there are no harmful long-term effects to worry about. As its name suggests, blow-in insulation is blown into spaces using a blower machine. This machine is often available to rent or will come with and be operated by insulation professionals. Blow-in insulation has been on the market and widely used for many years. It is incredibly energy-efficient. It’s also affordable, rodent and bug resistant, and highly environmentally friendly, usually made up of 85 percent recycled material. Myth 1: Only performs during winter False. This myth is fairly widespread for other methods of insulation as well. The common misconception is that blown-in insulation will let warm or cool air bleed through the loose material, but this isn’t true. The loose material becomes quite dense, which creates a blanket effect to seal and maintain temperatures effectively year-round. Myth 2: Can cause a house fire False. Blow-in insulation is commonly treated with boric acid, which is an effective flame-retardant. Additionally, blow-in insulation is very compact, which creates a low oxygen environment. Far from making your home prone to fires, this insulation can actually reduce the chances of a fire! Myth 3: Isn’t reliable in old homes False! Insulation can last for decades, but it will eventually degrade. Consider also that many old homes will not have been insulated properly in the first place. Very old homes will need insulation upgrades periodically, and it can be detrimental to the structure of the home to install batts and rolls of insulation - not to mention costly. Because blow-in insulation doesn’t need more than a small opening to install, it is an easy, efficient, and effective way to insulate both old and new homes Myth 4: It can only be used for walls False. Blow-in insulation can be installed anywhere that’s accessible to the blower machine. In addition to walls, blow-in insulation is suitable for attics, floors, crawlspaces, basements, and more! The more insulation you install, the more energy-efficient your home will be! Need an insulation upgrade? Call J&J Insulation today!
